III BEST National Engineering Competition

A Competição de Engenharia pretende assim desenvolver as capacidades dos alunos no que concerne:

1. •Capacidade de resolução de problemas;
   

2. •Oportunidade de aplicação prática de conhecimentos teóricos;
   

3. •Fomentar o trabalho em grupo;
   

4. •Promover o debate de ideias;
   

5. •Motivar a comunicação para audiências;
   

6. •Demonstrar competências;
   

7. •Promover momentos de lazer e diversão.
   

The Engineering Competition intends to develop the student's skills in regard to:

1. •Ability to solve problems;
   

2. •Opportunity to put to work some theoretical knowledge;
   

3. •Reinforce team work;
   

4. •Promote the debate of ideas;
   

5. •Motivate communication with audiences;
   

6. •Demonstrate abilities;
   

7. •Promote moments of leisure and fun.

Após 10 anos de competições locais, o alargamento do projecto do plano local para o nacional  foi o próximo passo, tendo ocorrido pela primeira vez em Portugal no ano 2005/2006, tendo Almada (FCT, INL) como grupo organizador. O evento teve uma cobertura significativa dos media, incluindo um dos canais públicos portugueses de televisão. O sucesso da experiência levou então à sua repetição em 2007/2008 no Porto (FE, UP) e de novo este ano, sendo que a cidade anfitriã será Lisboa (IST, UTL).

After 10 years of local competitions, the expansion of this project from a local to a national level was a natural step that occurred in Portugal in the year 2005/2006, with Almada (FCT, UNL) as the host. There was significative media coverage of the event, including from one of the public Portuguese television channels. The success of this experiment led to its repetition in the year 2007/2008 in Porto (FE, UP) and again this year, being that the host city will now be Lisbon (IST, UTL).

Este ano assinala-se outro feito: primeira vez temos o prazer de organizar uma Competição de Engenharia a nível europeu, a EBEC, com a presença dos estudantes mais inventivos e criativos seleccionados na Competição Portuguesa e outras 10 competições nacionais/regionais terão lugar por toda a Europa, nomeadamente:

5. •Bélgica;
   

6. •Ucrânia;
   

7. •Polónia;

This year will also be marked by another milestone: BEST will organize an Engineering Competition on an European level, the EBEC, with the presence of the most innovative and creative students selected not only from the Portuguese Competition but also another 10 national/regional competitions which will take place all over Europe, namelly:

3. •France;
   

4. •Italy;
   

5. •Belgium;
   

6. •Ukraine;

II BNEC
 

Nos dias 26, 27 e 28 de Abril de 2008 teve lugar a 2º edição da Competição Nacional de Engenharia realizada pelos Grupos Locais de Almada (FCT/UNL), Coimbra (FC, UC), Lisboa (IST/UTL), e Porto (FEUP/FCUP - UP) tendo decorrido na cidade invicta.

O que se propunha a estes estudantes de Engenharia era a resolução de um problema relativamente acessível: um protótipo para  transportar eficazmente e rapidamente vários tipos de materias de um dado sítio a outro tendo como obstáculo um terreno arenoso e uma rampa. No entanto o simples torna-se desafiante quando apenas se dispõe de um pouco mais de alicates, réguas, rolhas, fios, papel, serras, garrafas de plástico e esferovite entre outros dados na apresentação da prova. As 13 horas totais de duração da prova foram então um misto de trabalho de equipa com o imperativo de ser eficaz com a improvisação dada a pressão do tempo.

O primeiro lugar do pódio foi merecidamente conquistados por uma equipa de Coimbra enquanto que o 2º e o 3º posto foram para uma equipa de Lisboa e Coimbra outra vez, respectivamente. Ao primeiro lugar foram atribuídos vales brinde no valor de 300€.

II BNEC

On the 26th, 27th and 28th of April of 2008, was held the 2nd Edition of the BEST National Engineering Competition organised by the Local Groups of Almada (FCT/UNL), Lisboa (IST/UTL),  (FCT/UC) e Porto (FEUP/FCUP - UP) taking place in the "invicta" city.

What was proposed to this Engineering Students was the resolution of a fairly reasonable problem: a prototype to effectively transport in a short time, several types of materials from one given place to another having in mind the track: a sandy terrain and a ramp. However, the simple turns to challenging when you only have on your disposal little more than plers, rulers, corks, wires, paper, saws, plastic bottles, polystyrene foam and a couple more given when presenting the task. The 13 hours on disposal to resolve the task were a mixture of team work having in mind the need to be effective and improvised under the time pressure.

The first place was fairly earned by a team from Coimbra while the 2nd and 3rd place were given to a team from Lisbon and Coimbra, respectively. The first place got a total prize of 300€ in gift-coupons.

I BNEC

A I Competição Nacional de Engenharia foi organizada pelo Grupo Local de Almada, em Outubro de 2006 e foi também pioneiro nas Competições Nacionais Europeias. Neste primeiro desafio Nacional ao nível das Competições, os Grupos Locais de Almada (FCT/UNL), Coimbra (FC, UC), Lisboa (IST/UTL), e Porto (FEUP/FCUP - UP) uniram-se para dar vida a este grande projecto.

O desafio consistia em construir um veículo anfíbio, veículo esse que teria de ser capaz de não só percorrer um dado percurso terreste, circular num trajecto delineado e com curvas e governar-se num túnel mas também ser capaz de subir uma rampa para entrar numa piscina, atravessá-la sem afundar e sair da mesma com as suas plenas capacidades. A tarefa não é fácil e complica-se quando os materiais são tão rudimentares como por exemplo esferovite, papel de alumíneo e outros. As capacidades de comunicação, trabalho em equipa e competências técnicas unidas à inovação são testadas ao máximo.

O 1º e o 2º Lugar foram para as duas equipas do Porto enquanto que o 3º lugar foi para uma equipa de Almada. Os vencedores ganharam um curso de moto-4.

I BNEC

The 1st National Engineering Competition was organised by the Local Group of Almada in October of 2006 and was also a pioner in the National Engineering Competitions in Europe. In this first national challenge, when it comes to competitions, the Local Groups of Almada (FCT/UNL), Coimbra (FC, UC), Lisboa (IST/UTL), e Porto (FEUP/FCUP - UP) united to turn into life this great project.

The challenge consisted in building an amphibious vehicle, which had to not only to travel a given terrestrial path with curves and go through and out of a tunnel but also it had to be able to climb up a ramp to get inside a pool, swim it without sinking and come out of it again with his full capabilities still up and running. The task is not easy and it complicates itself when the materials at hand are as rudimentary as polystyrene foam, aluminium paper and others. Communications skills, team work and technical capabilities united with innovation are put under extreme testing.

The 1st and 2nd were given to the two teams from Porto wheareas the 3rd place went to a team from Almada. The winners of the competition won a 4*4 motorbike course.
